My Top 10 Tips for Frugal Living #5 Be Patient!

As I continue my Top 10 Tips for Frugal Living, my list so far:
    # 10 Know the Prices here
    # 9 Be Organized here
    # 8 Network here
    # 7 Rebate here
    # 6 Menu Planning here
    # 5 Be Patient!
Now, what I mean here is that it takes TIME to build your stockpile. Real stock piling occurs when you find an item on sale at a low price, combine it with a coupon, and buy the item in great quantity (as many coupons as you have on hand for that item). Don't get overzealous, blow the budget, and end up w/all toothpaste and nothing to eat!
I recommend (as someone did to me when I first started) that you start w/just a few items per week or month. You and you alone know what your budget will allow.
Let me give you an example: If you have $10 left in the grocery budget and you already have all the groceries you need until the next pay check or period, then by all means, go ahead and stock up on shampoo, bandaids, toothpaste, or whatever is available that week at the lowest price. But, on the other hand, if you need milk...well, then it should be plain to say that you better buy the milk and forego the stockpiling ambitions for the week. Don't put a shock to your budget (or wallet) by trying to do too much too quickly. Know that sales are cyclical, which means the item will be on sale again. Watch for it the next time, have your coupons ready and then purchase it at a fraction of the cost.
Basically, what I'm trying to say, is that yes, stockpiling is important. BUT, if it comes at the expense of your family having to do without an essential item, then it's not worth the money saved! You know what your family needs better than anybody. So, you are the judge. It's important to make wise decisions.

    Great Meal Planning Tool!

My Top 10 Tips for Frugal Living #6: Menu Plan

As I continue my Top 10 Tips for Frugal Living, my list so far:
    # 10 Know the Prices here
    # 9 Be Organized here
    # 8 Network here
    # 7 Rebate here
    # 6 Menu Planning

I believe that menu planning is vital for the frugal shopper. It is important that you know what you need to provide meals for your family. To begin, make a list of what meals your family enjoys. Then make another list of what ingredients are required to make these meals. Now you know what to look for in the sales flyers in the coming weeks.

I always print a blank monthly calendar off my computer. As I sit to decide the meals I will prepare for the upcoming week, I always fall back on my stock pile. For example, if I know I have pasta and sauce (which you know I do!), then know for sure that at least one night we will have spaghetti, ziti, lasagna, etc.... This is how the two methods of stock-piling and menu-planning work together. I know what I have on hand, I know what's on sale, and I know what meals will fit for this week.

Too often, before I began menu planning, it would get to be late in the afternoon, and I still did not know what we were having for dinner. It's that scenario that leads to too much eating out...it's just easier to order pizza at that point. But, when you have a plan, it's much easier to follow that plan, buy items at the lowest price, and save on eating out. Plus, planning what your menu is beforehand and purchasing what you need, leads to fewer trips to the grocery store and less impulse buying. Again, this saves money!

I hope this helps...I know it has been beneficial for me to menu plan!

Here's another reason it's important to know your store policies...the clerk stocking the aisle I was in told me that my $15 must be AFTER any coupons.  I asked if this was a new policy, as I had never been told that or had that experience.  No, that's always been the policy.  So, I "tried" out what I believed to be the policy and only bought the 4, used my coupons, and only paid $7 and some changed.  And, a $5 RR printed...

    # 7 Take advantage of REBATING!
I have found that serious couponing, in addition to rebating, can yield maximum results. Now, I know that rebating isn't quite what it has always been, but believe me, there are still rebates available.
I have found the best resource for rebating to be Refund Cents. Michele has a great magazine that is mailed out monthly, and she also has a daily blog. If you're looking for a rebate, she will most likely have it on her list.
Anyway, one thing about rebating, is to be organized about it (here we go again w/organization!). I learned a great trick...do NOT put away an item for which you have a mail-in rebate (MIR) until you have the rebate filled out and ready to mail. That way, you won't forget about it. It has helped me to be timely in my rebates.
A lot of times you will see a Try Me Free (TMF) come out on a new product. Or, more often you will see a Money-Back Guarantee (MBG). But, when you are able to get an item on sale, use a coupon, and then get a rebate, the company is paying you to purchase the item! It's a great way to save more money!

Now, what I mean here, is that it is important that we help one another. One of the thing that most impressed my when I first started blogging was how helpful and unselfish everybody is!! If I find a sale, I pass it on. If you find a sale, pass it on. And being able to glean from one another, we are ALL able to save lots of money. I can't find all the sales by myself, and neither can you. But, together, as we share info, we can!!
I know this sounds simple, and it is. But, yet, it is SO important that we have that giving attitude. There's no place for pride. I only share the sales and how well I was able to do at Meijer, for example, so that you can do the same. NOT for boasting!! It's my way to share and help others save money. It's called Networking.
